Rugby 15s holders Kakamega High School, Maseno School and Cardinal Otunga began their title defence in victorious fashion as the Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) Term One games started in Kakamega, Kisumu and Kisii regions respectively yesterday.
In the games, which comprise rugby 15s, basketball, hockey, swimming, handball and athletics, Kakamega who are also the national champions beat arch rivals Musingu 5-0 in a tough Group D match played at their backyard.
An eighth minute unconverted try from winger Timothy Omela was enough to separate the two teams. In Group C, Mukumu Boys mauled Mwhihila 37-0 while Koyonzo beat Butere 8-3 in another tough match.
In boys’ hockey, defending champions Musingu hammered Koyonzo 5-0, goals scores by Richard Njuki, Ian Olando, who scored two, Job Wandera and Patrick Rachami. In Kisumu, holder Maseno announced their title intentions with a 55-0 thrashing of debutants Onjiko 55-0. The hosts, however, received a shocking welcome in basketball where they lost to Kisumu Boys.
Maseno started on a high note by clinching the first quarter 14-12 but Kisumu Boys took the second, third and fourth quarters 17-12, 16- 12 and 13-12 for a 58-50 win.
In another rugby encounter, Ndiru Secondary overcame Dr Aloo Gumbi 32-0 while in boys’ handball, 2017 runners up Chulaimbo run amok over Dr Allo Gumbi, beating them 34-10 as Katolo Mixed stunned Kisumu Day 13-8. Ratta Mixed overpowered Thur-Gem 19-17 as Maseno overcame little-known Manera 24-12.

In Kisii, defending champions Cardinal Otunga started their title defence brightly by shutting out perennial rivals Itierio Boys 26-0. In girls’ handball, title holders Kegati beat St Patrick’s 11-5, the latter recovering to defeat Sameta 13-3.
Itierio started badly by going down 7-6 to Geturi who had lost their opening match 11-15 to Gianchere. In girls’ hockey, defending champions Kereri hammered St Michael 7-0 with Lilian Zachary scoring a hat-trick while in the boys category, Cardinal Otunga Mosocho launched their campaign with a barren draw against Nyamagwa.
