Uhuru to open AGRF conference in Gigiri

President Uhuru Kenyatta will today officially open the African Green Revolution Forum 2016 which brings together 1,500 agriculture experts and influencers from across the globe.

President Uhuru (pictured) will attend the evening session which will culminate in the inaugural Africa Food Prize Award ceremony where several Heads of State and government are expected.

During the event, the experts will leverage on past meetings to chart the way forward for the continent’s dwindling agriculture sector.

Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa President Agnes Kalibata has said that African countries spend in excess of $35 billion (Sh3.5 trillion) every year on food imports of which $500 million (Sh50 billion) is spent on rice imports in the East African Community alone.

She warned that in about 10 years, the region could be spending $110 billion (Sh11 trillion) on food imports.

The forum is expected to turn around the state of affairs through research and policy interventions by working closely with private sector and governments.

Through its ‘Seize the Moment’ clarion call, the forum will put into perspective research in various sectors including soil health, business-focused investments in production, processing, value addition and marketing.
