Rules on eating food in the office

We’re all guilty of annoying food habits at the workplace. Sometimes you get slammed you don’t think you can leave your desk long enough to eat. While bringing food to work isn’t a breach of etiquette, there are rules to follow when you eat lunch in an office. Or at least, there should be, writes Wairimu Nyingi

When was the last time you heard, “Wow, that fish smells really great!” Yeah, we thought so.

2. Hard-boiled eggs

The idea of mayai pasua (hard-boiled eggs) is appealing to many. After all, it is a quick healthy snack, especially when you are on the go or do not have time to sit for a full meal. However, some people cannot stand the smell, so it might just be wise to avoid an office gag fest all together.

3. Crunchy snack foods

Unless you want the name ‘Captain Crunch’, best steer away from crunchy snack foods. Whether we’re talking tortilla chips or popcorn — there’s nothing worse than when you’re trying to concentrate, then you hear someone mindlessly chomping down from across the desk or work station.

4. Curry

I love curry, however, in addition to being packed with flavour, it can be overpowering — from sauces to well, everything. It’s best to leave this tasteplosion to your own dining room.

5. Brocolli

So much for going green! While this superfood is packed with antioxidants, fibre and vitamin C, it is super smelly when it is cooked or reheated. Whenever possible, enjoy it raw.

6. Garlic-heavy dishes

Even the dead un-dead don’t like it! And yes, garlic is a magical ingredient when you’re trying to get a vampire off your tail, however, the cons cancel out the positives. Not only does it stink up your breathe and come out of your pores, but you can’t even break a sweat (read — there goes your social life. You might as well hit up a convent — no pun intended).

7. Inappropriately shaped fruits

World Cucumber Day came and went days ago, and if you weren’t one of the lucky few who hit up the bar with bon fide cucumbers as currency in exchange for Hendrick’s Gin, you might as well call it a day. While anatomically shaped fruits might be amusing, they have no place at work.

8. Barbecue

Would you really want your CEO to walk past you as you lick the bone of the rib you just scarfed down? Heck, you can worship that stuff — just don’t have it at the office. Barbecue is also a messy endeavour, and no one wants to be stuck in a white shirt sporting a nasty stain all daylong.

9. Anything your co-workers are allergic to

You need to be aware and sensitive to your co-workers food allergies. Take the case of peanuts — always eat them away from people who have allergies and always wash your hands once you’re fninshed.

10. Anything alive

If I need to explain this to you, then you likely don’t have a job anyway.
