High-scorers Bandari and Ulinzi Stars are among the teams which will be angling to dislodge Gor Mahia from the top of the Kenyan Premier League (KPL) chart in the second round of action this weekend. Both teams posted convincing victories at the start of the season last weekend, Bandari vanquishing Sofapaka 3-0 and Ulinzi dispatching Zoo Kericho 4-2 but it will be a different ball game altogether for them this time round as they are up against tricky fixtures.
While Bandari host the never-say-die Chemelil Sugar at Mbaraki Sports ground in Mombasa Saturday, Ulinzi Stars will be in Awendo as the visitors of Sony Sugar who will be seeking to atone for their shaky start in which they went down 1-0 to newly-promoted Wazito.
Gor’s early leadership in the league on the strength of goal aggregate is bound to be brought to a halt as they have been exempted from the weekend action due to their engagement in the Africa Champions League. However, the main talking point amongst football lovers in the country is the match between battle-hardened sides Tusker and Posta Rangers in Ruaraka Sunday.
Tusker are yet to come to terms with an indifferent start in the season when they fell 2-0 to Chemelil Sugar and another defeat will not augur well with their supporters. As for Rangers, the team did well by coming from behind to restrict AFC Leopards to a one-all draw in Nakuru last weekend and if the mailmen performance is anything to go by, Tusker should expect a torrid afternoon.
The only worry by Rangers coach Sammy Omollo is the injury on Tusker reject Danson Kago who saved the team the blushes with the equaliser in the highly physical contest against Ingwe. In the meantime, battle-royale looms at Mbaraki grounds where Bandari, who nearly had a field day against Sofapaka, face the Chemelil hurdle.
Anthony Wambani, Bandari’s two-goal hero against Batoto Ba Mungu, is once against expected to be the pivot of the dockers frontline and has such players as David King’atua and Shaban Kenga for support.
In Machakos on Sunday, there will be a double-header which has the ingredients of a thriller, Kariobangi Sharks taking on new freebies Vihiga United in the first match at 2.00 pm followed by the showdown between Mathare United and Nzoia United at 4.15 pm. There is certainly no love lost between Sharks and Vihiga as the former will be gunning to avenge elimination from the GOtv Shield Cup by the Western Kenya side last year. – AFP
