The famous Khayega playground will undergo a major rehabilitation process this year by Kakamega County government after the completion of the survey being undertaken.
This was revealed during the soccer finals of the first edition of Farouk Machanje Cup that was played on January 1 in Khayega Ground, Kakamega County that was attended by scores of MCAs from Kakamega County assembly.
Speaking to thousands of soccer fans who attended the function, Isukha South MCA, who was also sponsor of the event Farouk Machanje, reiterated that he and other county assembly members plus the governor are doing everything possible to restore the state of the field.
“This playfield has rich history in producing the best players in the country and we cannot sit down and watch while it’s being converted into car park and also being encroached upon,” he said. He added: “We shall be waiting for the final report from County surveyors who have visited the site and any one who has encroached on the field will not be spared.”
Khayega which is also famous for bullfight events has produced the likes of the late Athony Mukabwa, Washington Muhanji, Reginald Asibwa, Justus Muhati, Tony Lidonde, among others.
Kakamega County Women representative Elsie Muhanda who was the chief guest revealed that governor Oparanya’s pre-election manifesto was to empower the youth through sports, which can be only realised through putting up right structures in place.
“Our major objective as the county government is to join hands and rehabilitated all the playing fields across the county in order to cushion our players against unnecessary injuries,” said Muhanda.
