Preparations for this year’s Mashujaa Day celebrations at Bukhungu Stadium in Kakamega county are complete, Governor Wycliffe Oparanya said yesterday.
Speaking during inspection tour of the venue, he urged residents to turn up in large numbers on October 20 to celebrate the freedom fighters’ fete. “Residents of Kakamega are honoured to host the event and we are committed to ensuring the celebrations are a success,” he said.
Businesspeople in the region expressed optimism the event will boost their businesses. “We are happy to host Mashujaa Day this year. We expect to benefit from the event. Our businesses will record high profits,” said John Ombuni, a fruit vendor in Kakamega town.
Interior Principal Secretary Karanja Kibicho commended the joint national day celebrations committee comprising both County and National government officials for good work in planning the event.
Defence Cabinet secretary Rachel Omamo, Chief of Defence Forces General Samson Mwathethe and Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet also inspected the venue.
