Work diligently, Maraga tells new High Court head

Chief Justice David Maraga yesterday challenged newly-elected Principal Judge of the High Court Lydia Achode to roll up her sleeves and champion service delivery.

Justice Achode formally began her five-year tenure yesterday after she was elected during the annual conferences of High Court Judges in Mombasa on April 23.

 “What is expected of your role is now to ensure that the performance of the Court is improved; that in consultation with the Chief Registrar, Judges of the Court are properly facilitated; and that Wanjiku derives the real benefit of the improvements you oversee,”  Maraga said when he presided over the installation ceremony at the Milimani law courts in Nairobi.

Justice Maraga said the High Court played a significant role in the Judiciary and the Principal Judge was expected to ensure it is accountable, efficient and effective in the administration of justice.

“I have confidence that you will manage the office of principal Judge in the most professional and prudent manner. I assure you of my unwavering support and the support of the leadership in the Judiciary,” he said.

Justice Achode has had a colourful career in the Judiciary since 1986 when she was appointed a District Magistrate in Kericho and was later posted to Makadara law courts in Nairobi where she served between 1988 and 1994.

In 1994 she was transferred to Mombasa Law Court as a Senior Resident Magistrate. Later she was promoted to Principal Magistrate in 2000 and to Senior Principal Magistrate in 2004. In the same year she was appointed as the Chief Court Administrator and joined the Bench as a Judge in September 2011.

She has experience in Civil and Criminal Law and Procedure, Commercial Litigation, Taxation Law as well as Gender and Family Law.

having routinely adjudicated on these areas of law for a period spanning over twenty years. Justice Achode is also the Treasurer of the Kenya Women Judges Association.
