Meru University VC sent on terminal leave

George Kebaso  and  Kirera Mwiti  @PeopleDailyKe Education Cabinet secretary, Amina Mohamed has sent Meru University of Science and Technology Vice Chancellor, Prof Japhet Magambo on terminal leave pending expiry of his contract in June.

She immediately appointed Charity Gichuki to take over the running of the institution until a new VC is appointed. Until her appointment, Gichuki  was the university’s Deputy Vice Chancellor incharge of Finance, Administration and Planning.

This comes a week after the institution’s Student Council secretary general, Evans Njoroge was shot dead by police in the wake of the learners’ protests against fees increase.  The 23-year-old was a fourth year student pursuing a degree in Mathematics and Computer Science.

The CS made the announcement after meeting members of the university council at a closed- door session at the institution yesterday. She told journalists that the university council is working round the clock to address the challenges facing the institutions and urged its student leadership to embrace dialogue as a means of solving their grievances.

“It is civil for the students to approach issues that affect their normal college activities and addressing the problems facing the university through dialogue instead of mounting demonstrations,” she said.

She asked the acting VC to extend discussions with the community around the institution in matters affecting them to facilitate amicable solutions. Amina said the university students who were sent home following the shooting last Tuesday would be recalled soon to resume studies. She directed that the institution be reopened within a week.

“We are working very hard with other government agencies on this matter so that we can find a solution,” she said. The CS also said investigations into the killing of the student leader had already begun.

Meanwhile, the family of the murdered student leader is crying foul over failure by the State to arrest the suspect in the case.  This came as the family announced that the slain leader will be laid to rest in their home in Longonot in Naivasha tomorrow.
