In South Africa, an ANC faction that backs President Jacob Zuma (pictured)has suffered a crushing blow after a high court annulled its internal election win saying it was “unlawful”.

The Pietermaritzburg High Court handed down a judgement that could see new provincial elections for the ANC in the province of KwaZulu-Natal. The ANC held an internal leadership conference in 2015 but the losers challenged the result.

And today they have been vindicated. Among other irregularities, the court found that there was “apparent manipulation or influence of voting process”. This could have wider implications in the run-up to the ANC’s conference in December, when a new leader is set to be chosen and pro and anti-Zuma factions are likely to slug it out. It could mean that the pro-Zuma group will have less influence. — AFP
