Five-year-old girl burnt to death

A five year old girl was burnt beyond recognition after their house was gutted down by a fierce inferno that broke out in the 6.00am incident in Lanet, Nakuru County.

The child’s parents had escorted a family member to the airport in Nairobi leaving the child under the care of a female relative who noted noise coming from other rooms and went out to check only to find the house being consumed in flames.

The lady called for help from neighbours who responded quickly and fought the fire before running out of water supply before realizing she had left the little baby helpless in bed and the room was already razed down.

Area chief Francis Kariuki who was tipped by a neighbour used his Twitter handle to inform residents who turned out in large numbers to fight the fire though they were overwhelmed after saving some items from the church attached to the priest’s house.

“I was informed that the priest’s house was on fire by a neighbour and called on residents to turn out help put it off and they came in large numbers though we ran short of water.” Kariuki said.

Kariuki added that a gas cylinder in the house exploded escalating the fire that to other rooms including a church hall attached to the priest’s house.

Although the County fire brigade responded in time and put it off, the fire had already consumed property of unknown value belonging to the priest.

The father of the child is a priest attached to the Community of the crucified One Church and a head teacher of neighbouring Lanet Umoja Primary School which his church sponsors.

The residents were left in great distress as the events unfold with officers from the Crime Scene Support Service together with Kenya Red Cross paramedics arrived at the scene and took remains of the child to Nakuru County government mortuary.

The cause of the fire has not been established while it is reported that it would have resulted from power surge as the area experienced numerous blackouts in the morning hours.
