Suspected contraband sugar nabbed in Webuye, Bungoma

A suspected consignment of contraband sugar worth 250 million shillings was Thursday impounded at the warehouses of Rai Paper Mills in Webuye in Bungoma county.

Unconfirmed reports indicate that the sugar belonged to West Kenya Sugar company in Kakamega but was labelled “brown sugar, not for sale.

The incident happened a day after Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Matiang’i revealed that a consignment of 1,365 bags of sugar impounded from warehouses in Eastleigh, Ruiru and Nairobi’s industrial area contained poisonous chemicals including copper and mercury.
