She has caused a buzz on social media and households with her question of ‘Dad naweza pata musister mdogo?’ in a TV commercials for Ilara Yoghurt. Meet Zawadi Kayyoh, a four-year-old spoken word poet
Who is Zawadi Kayyoh?
She is a public speaker and emcee. She has appeared on various platforms, in schools, universities, churches, gala awards entertaining guests through spoken word poetry touching on humanitarian-based issues. She is also a popular face on TV as she features in advertisements. She loves music and dancing, travelling, swimming, watching cartoons and intends to be a chef.
How did she get into advertising at such a young age?
She was registered as a model as at six months. It has taken a lot of networking and prayer over the years to have her called for auditions.
At such a tender age, how has she managed to strike a balance between school and poetry?
Most of the pieces were done before 2017. She was homeschooling. It’s flexible, helps a child move at their pace and gives enough time for academic work and engaging in extra curriculum activities. However, in January, she enrolled in the Montessori programmes, which she now doubles with poetry.
What are some of the challenges?
Some performances and auditions are on short notice and this forces her to reorganise and re-prioritise herself and her schedule.
Being selected as the Ilara Yogurt baby, blowing up roofs at the performances. She also got a good review from Safaricom CEO Bob Collymore. Her poem was also used by the NCIC chair Francis ole Kaparo for his speech at Kenyatta University 2016 Culture Week.
What are Zawadi’s future plans?
She hopes to reach out to humanity through poetry, to work with international bodies such as the UN to drive home her agenda. She also hopes to be nominated someday as a peace ambassador. She is also getting into acting and music.
