A record 19 teams have confirmed participation in the 37th Kiko Cup tournament which is slated for November 17-December 30 in Lang’ata.
According to Programmes Manager Omar Kisia, Woodley Stadium and Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) ground will be the venues of the tournament that was last held in 2016.
The teams in the event include City Landers, Komesha, Gaza, Gogo Boyz, Kibera Golden, Lexus, Kibera Saints, Kibera United, Kipaji Academy, KNH and Maa. Others are Sam 105, Recimianto, Riruta United, Uweza, Waithaka Sparks, Lifesports, Kingstone 14 and Soccer Talent.
“Everything has been put in place to ensure this year’s edition is a successful and I would also wish to appeal for sponsors to come on board,” said Kisia.
Fifa Best won the 2016 edition after beating Gaza 4-1 in an epic final at Woodley. At stake for the winners is Sh 50,000, runners-up Sh 30,000 and third-placed team Sh 20,000.
The youth categories tournament is also in the offing and will be staged in the course of the senior event.
Kiko Cup was founded by former Kenya Football Federation (KFF) national treasurer Noordinne Taib in the early 80s but since then it has grappled with lack of sponsors despite producing some of Kenya’s greatest players.
