Personal cars, online cab drivers and boda boda operators yesterday made a killing as they ferried commuters to work.
Private cars made brief stops by bus stops ferrying people to town at a cost ranging between Sh100 and Sh300, depending on the distance. Mobile phone app taxis also did booming business as commuters pooled resources for a ride to their destinations.
“We opted to share the bill because matatus are charging nearly the same amount to town. Why should I pay Sh150 from Umoja to town yet four people can share a cab for the same amount?” asked Joy Midiwa, a resident of Donholm.
Others opted to walk to their destinations as transport crisis started to bite on day one of the matatu strike.
The commuter train reported full capacity heading into town, leaving some commuters stranded along the way. For some people, motorbike were the preferred means of transportation in a bid to beat traffic snarl-ups.
