It was a sweet revenge for Notorious on soft ground after beating stablemate Winter Comet by a tight neck in the highlight 2,400m Conference Cup at the Ngong Racecourse Sunday.
Notorious was jockeyed by Muoki Kiilu who clocked at 2:41:00. Only last year, the cross-breed fillie, a seasoned competitor in this category, was whitewashed by Winter Comet but on hard ground.
It would appear that Notorious was well prepared because straight from the start it powered forward so as to gain vantage position. The mere neck gap just showed how the two Onesmus Mutua fillies thirsted for victory;which happened to be the eventual winner’s seventh inside 16 starts.
Chasing at the back was Rifle Range and River King from the Oliver Gray stable; with the highly tipped latter fairing poorly under the guidance of Protus Kinuthia. The ending especially at the 200m point was exhiliarating as the front duo pushed each other viciously.
Meanwhile, jockey Paul Kiarie was in impeccable form riding South African-bred fillie Kidnap in the 1,400m Satima Maiden.
The meet for three-year-old, saw the Onesmus Mutua trained fillie clinch its first win in only two starts to collect a cash purse of Shs 32,604. It was an exciting start at the lights as Edwin Njenga atop Mount Sinai took off for pace inside the first 600m before the chasing pack of Kidnap and Grace Kelly jockeyed by experienced James Muhindi caught up at the final stretch.
Kidnap took the wide Lane and used its big strides to outrun the leader while Njenga studiously kept Muhindi at Bay with sublime defending.
The race which was clocked at 1:31:05, saw electric Kiarie on 56.5 kilos cruise top with a gap of one-and-a-half lengths. This time was just under six seconds set by Adamant 15 years ago.
