Kericho County Governor Paul Chepkwony has lauded athletes from the county for flying the national flag high.
He said the athletes have made the county and the entire country proud for having excelled in their careers and putting Kenya in the world map in terms of athletics.
Governor Chepkwony said the athletes had made them proud both at home and abroad by winning events and bringing medals like never before.
“We must be proud of our athletes for making us proud both at home and abroad. These are also our heroes and heroines and therefore we should recognise their efforts and fete them always,” said Chepkwony who is also the chairman of Sports and Culture committee at the Council of Governors.
He singled out athletes from Kericho County who of late have shone on tracks in various events. He congratulated Mercy Chepkorir Kirarei for winning a silver medal in the 3,000m at Olympic Youth Games in Buenos Aires, Argentina last month and Beatrice Chebet for making history by becoming the first Kenya gold medallist in the 5,000m during Under20 championships in Tampere, Finland in July this year.
The governor also praised Sandra Chebet, a gold medallist who broke the Course Record in the 10KM Road Race event in Valencia, Spain in January this year and went ahead to win Isaiah Kiplagat Ndalat Gaa race in Nandi last month among many of her achievements in athletics.
“Their outstandings have made Kericho the true home of athletics champions. I would also like to congratulate their coaches and technical teams which is behind their success in sports” the governor added.
The athletes are from Lemotit Training Camp in Londiani sub-county in the county. The governor revealed that they are organising a proper ceremony to celebrate their success at the camp and encourage them to keep winning.
