The inaugural Aviation and Tourism Seven-aside football challenge kicked off in Mombasa Sports Club yesterday with over 50 teams drawn from the local and international corporate companies from the industry taking part.
In the morning matches, Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) seven-aside football team registered one point after settling for a goal-less draw against 10-man Coast Media, while Trade Wings Association from Nairobi harvested a 3-0 win against Ugatuzi also from Nairobi.
Despite being the favourites in the tournament, Coast Media failed to stamp their authority in the first match, and a red card flashed to captain Brian Otieno a few minutes after the match kick-off, it was evident that they would not reign against KWS.
In other matches, Mantubila booked their first win against Golden Boys through a solitary goal netted in the second half, while Golden Boys settled for a barren draw against Ushindi CDC of Mombasa.
Others are Omax who scooped an early 4-1 win over Cross Kubwa while Wananyuki Boys of Mombasa harvested 4-0 against Alidina Sea.
Speaking on the sidelines of the opening ceremony activities, Sports Tourism Limited marketing director, Paul Mutua said the competition held in Mombasa for the first time offered an excellent opportunity for Mombasa to market itself and for the local business people to cash in on the event.
Mombasa County executive in charge of Youth, Gender, Sports and Culture, Munywoki Kyallo said the main objective of the competition is to promote sports tourism in the region.
