Sofapaka wary of Sharks in Shield final

July 23, 2017 is a day Sofapaka would wish to forget in a hurry as it was when their egos were badly bruised by Kariobangi Sharks who beat them 3-1 for the latter to breeze to the quarter-finals of the Shield which was then sponsored by GOtv.

A brace by Masoud Juma and a lone strike from Paul Kamau did the trick for Sharks who had gained promotion to the SportPesa Premier League (SPL) from the National Super League (NSL) the same year.

To say that Sofapaka have a score to settle with Sharks is an understatement given that they would also wish to cast away the spell of a 1-0 defeat they suffered at the hands of William Muluyia’s charges in the return match of the 2018 SPL season on August 25.

Today, Batoto Ba Mungu have a grand opportunity to inflict revenge on Sharks when the two teams face off in the final of the SportPesa Shield Cup at Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos. At stake for the winning team is a ticket to represent Kenya in the 2019 CAF Confederation Cup and Sh2 million cash prize to boot.

The grand finale will be preceded by the third place-off match between AFC Leopards and Ulinzi Stars with the winners pocketing Sh750, 000 and the losing team going home with Sh 500,000.

For a lengthy part of this week, the meeting between Sofapaka and Sharks has been the talk of Nairobi where the two teams reside as book-makers place their wagers on who is likely to win the two team’s Mashujaa Day meeting.

However, it would appear that Sharks are hungrier of the two teams given that unlike Sofapaka who were Kenya’s emissaries in the 2009 CAF Cup, they are angling to make their maiden appearance in African football.

Speaking to Peoplesport, Muluya said that while his charges are enthusiastic about the match, they will treat it like any other.
