Luka Modric has been named the UEFA Men’s Player of the Year after leading Real Madrid to their third successive Champions League title.
The Croatian, who had enjoyed a surreal year for club and country, beat fellow nominees Mohamed Salah and Cristiano Ronaldo to the award.
Ronaldo picked up as the Champions League’s best forward last campaign with Real Madrid after becoming the top scorer in the competition for a sixth-year running.
Sergio Ramos was voted as the competition’s best defender last season while Modric collected his second award after he was named as the best midfielder for his incredible tournament.
Real and Costa Rica keeper Keylor Navas made it four out of four award categories after he was named as the best goalkeeper of last season’s Champions League with Real Madrid. Wolfsburg’s Penille Harder also won the UEFA Woman’s Player of the Year.
Former Manchester United and Real Madrid star and football icon David Beckham received the president’s award for his work outside of football and the impact he had made throughout and after his career.
Meanwhile, Cristiano Ronaldo’s agent Jorge Mendes had some words to say about the UEFA Best Player of the Year award given to Modric.
“Simply ridiculous,” Mendes said. “Cristiano Ronaldo scored 15 goals, taking Real Madrid to Champions League victory once again, it’s just ridiculous,” he added.
Mendes’ quotes are a bit shocking considering that Modric and Ronaldo were teammates just months ago, and while some could point out that Ronaldo himself didn’t say anything, it’s likely that he felt the same way. Ronaldo didn’t attent the ceremony, something he has done in the past when he hasn’t won the main award.
It seems that Modric has a chance of winning FIFA’s The Best and the Ballon D’Or. His performances in the FIFA World Cup granted him the Best Player Award in that tournament and Cristiano Ronaldo appears to be his only rival to win both The Best and the Ballon D’Or.
Ronaldo completed a brilliant season for Real Madrid as well but Modric appears to have the edge after leading Croatia to the FIFA World Cup Final. If he won the UEFA Best Player of the Year, he seems to be the favorite for The Best and the Ballon D’Or as well.
