FKF Women’s Premier League defending champions Vihiga Queens are keen to continue their good run when they face Kakamega Leeds and Oserian this week having pocketed six crucial points in their two victories last week.
Alex Alumira’s side thrashed Wadadia 7-0 and followed it up with a 6-1 demolition of Kayole Starlets to move to 33 points after 13 matches, three behind league leaders Thika Queens who have played 12 matches.
Vihiga begin that twin attack with today’s tie against Leeds and Alumira says the match will be crucial in shaping their second leg campaign hence the need to take it seriously.
“I have watched Leeds play this season and they are not a weak side. They are putting up a fight in every match and we have to be careful not to underestimate them,” said Alumira.
Vihiga will then be in action on Saturday against Oserian Ladies, the champions keen not to avoid a third loss of the season as that would spell doom to their title defence campaign given they are chasing an unbeaten Thika.
However, Oserian will be no pushovers and are likely to come out guns blazing ready to redeem themselves after a poor run of results, the latest being Monday’s 2-0 loss to Trans Nzoia Falcons. The Naivasha-based side have played 13 matches for six wins and as many losses with only one draw.
“We expect a tough fixture against Oserian but I am confident we will do well. Our away record this season has been better than at home but I also expect Oserian to be eager to pick maximum points. That means we have to keep a tight defence and strive to grab early goals,” added Alumira.
The other match today will see leaders Thika play sixth-placed Spedag at the Barclays Sports Club.
Thika are chasing a 13th win in as many matches while Spedag are after their eighth in their 14th match of the season.
