Leaders were yesterday united in mourning the death of Migori Senator Ben Oluoch Okello who passed on while receiving treatment at the MP Shah Hospital in Nairobi after a long illness.
President Uhuru Kenyatta and Opposition leader Raila Odinga led the country in mourning the departed politician. His family told the press that he succumbed to a long battle with throat cancer.
Uhuru described Okello as a peace crusader who propagated messages of love and unity, one that never shied from standing for what was right for the country as Raila said he was a humble leader with a promising career in politics.
Senate Speaker Ken Lusaka eulogised Okello as a devout leader who promoted patriotism, good governance and from time to time dissected the Constitution for his listeners’ consumption.
Former Cabinet minister and MP Dalmas Otieno eulogised Okello as a promising leader, as he called on the government to invest in cancer facilities to battle the deadly disease.
In Migori, sorrow engulfed residents as news of Okello’s demise greeted the county at wee hours on Tuesday. Religious leaders, business community and residents thronged his home at Kanyimach in Rongo sub-county to console the family.
