As the government intensifies war against illicit goods in the country, another consignment of assorted contraband worth Sh1.2 billion has been seized.
Deputy Head of Public Service, Wanyama Musiambo said the goods were seized as a result of the 100 per cent verification exercise of all goods coming into the country, to clean up the country of illicit goods.
Musiambo also stated that a probe is underway to establish the owners of the 89 forty-foot containers seized with either concealed items or substandard items, which are being held at the Nairobi Inland Container Depot.
Among the concealed items included ready-made garments declared as baby blankets valued at Sh11 million, 6,000 electric cables worth Sh9.3 million, under garment worth Sh21 million, assorted electrical items which had been misdeclared worth Sh80 million.
Other concealed items included nine forty-foot containers of cooking oil valued at Sh 10.8 million, 23 containers of assorted electronics and other assorted items worth Sh275 million, 46 containers of assorted cigarettes worth Sh828 million as well as China police attire.
Counterfeits seized included 148 rolls of East African cables worth Sh600,000, 12,000 Philips bulbs worth Sh 1.8 million, 37 boxes of Toyota parts worth Sh500,000, 10,000 pieces of tooth brushes worth 120,000, 7,500 GOTv decoders valued at Sh22.5 million as well as 96 pieces of extension cables.
Under substandard goods category, impounded was galvanised iron sheets worth Sh6million. He said at least 25 people are being held in connection with the consignment and will soon be prosecuted.
