Top guns in this year’s Nyanza Region Secondary School Sports Association (NRSSSA) Term Two games have sent early warning to their regional opponents as they started their campaign with resounding victories in the opening matches staged at Cardinal Otunga High School, Kisii.
National volleyball boys’ champions Sengera SDA from Kisii County started on a resounding note, thrashing Nyamiranga SDA from Nyamira county three sets to zero (3-0) while their compatriots Mogonga PAG (2018, Kisii county champions) beat Kandiege from Homa Bay 3-1 in an entertaining opener while Kanyawanga (Migori county) lost to Got Agulu (Siaya) 3-2 in a very heated encounter.
In the girls’ category, volleyball regional Queens Sega from Siaya had an easy ride as they dismantled Mabera Girls from Kuria, Migori county in 3-0 sets to announce their intention to once again retain the region gong.
Sironga from Nyamira lost 3-1 to host Kerera (Kisii county) while favourites Sengera SDA (Kisii County) saw dust in the opening match, going down 3-0 to Nyakach of Kisumu County as Lwak from Siaya overpowered Homa Bay’s Magare, beating them 3-1.
Sega made it two wins out of two by beating Kerera 3-2 in an end-to-end serving match while title contenders Mabera recovered to beat Sironga 3-0 sets in their second match.
In football, former boys’ U19 champions Kisumu Day fired early warning of intention by beating hosts Gesero 2-1 in an entertaining opener before running riot in the second encounter to, hammer Nyamira county’s champions Nyansiongo Boys 4-1.
Nyansiongo are technically out of the competition after they had lost their first match 1-0 to Nyandago while hosts Gesero recovered in their second match to beat Nyandago 4-1 and rekindle their hopes of making it to the semis in today’s fixtures while in the girls’ U19 category, hosts Gesero Girls faced stiff competition from Sagegi of Kuria, Migori County before standing firm to run away with the opener 2-1.
