Former netball girls’ champions Obambo Mixed Secondary School are confident of a successful campaign when the Nyanza region Kenya Secondary School Championships Term Two games begin at Cardinal Otunga High School, Mosocho today.
Obambo, three-time winners, under the tutelage of Eddy Omondi, believe they have what it takes to retain the title and proceed to the national level.
“That is (national) what we are aiming at but we will first deal with the hurdle ahead of us which is the regional games,” said Omondi.
Obambo are up against Nyamira Girls, Sironga, Birongo, Kadika, Kobala and Kisii county four-time winners Mogonga PGA who have vowed to turn tables.
Meanwhile in football, Kisumu Day, coached by Dan Otieno, have landed a relatively easy Pool A alongside Kisii county champions Gesero, little-known Nyandago and St Kizito and Nyansiongo while Migori’s Nyarach, Ringa, Siaya’s Wera and JJ Masime’s Nduru face off in Pool B.
Football will have new champions after Nyarach eliminated Kanga Boys at the Rongo sub-county level. Nyandago, Nyarach and Nduru will be making their debut.
“We’re ready for the championship and our first target is to go past the group stage then make it to the semi-final. History may repeat itself as in 2012, at this very place (Cardinal Otunga), Gekomoni from Gusii won the championship and we hope to have that kind of run,” said Gesero coach Evans Akanga.
Regional heavyweights Sega Girls from Siaya county will once again be the team to beat in volleyball and will face tough competition from Kisii’s Sengera SDA while in the boys’ category, national and regional defending champions Sengera SDA will be seeking to forget a 3-1 loss to Mogonga PGA at the Kisii county finals and rise to the occasion.
