Six counties will square it out in the Athletics Kenya (AK) Regional Championships meeting slated for this weekend in Narok County.
The counties are Narok (hosts), Kajiado, Bomet, Kericho, Laikipia and Nakuru that will compete for honours during the regional championships.
Kericho is the defending champions. The Kericho team is upbeat of retaining their regional title.
Celebrated athletes such as Edwin Soi, Sandra Chebet and Emliy Chebet who form part of the Kericho team are expected to electrify the Narok Stadium when they will be competing in various races.
Meanwhile, AK Kericho branch has dismissed claims from some quarters that athletes from Kericho County have not been given chances to represent Kenya in various athletics meetings.
Speaking in Kericho town, the AK branch chairman Japheth Kemey termed the claims as baseless and unfounded saying the criteria of picking athletes was very clear and it is being done in a broad daylight at any stadium.
“Any athlete who qualifies irrespective of where he or she comes from so long as he/she has met the requirements to represent the country is automatically picked by a selection committee. So the issue of bias selection does not hold any water,” Kemey said.
The AK chairman was reacting to a section of athletics’ body officials from Kericho county who had accused those charged with the selection exercise of allegedly taking sides when doing so.
He challenged them to prove their claims if it is true there are some athletes who qualified and were locked out from representing the country.
Kemey at the same time called on pudding athletes to embrace various disciplines especially field events, an area he said have not been exploited by Kenyans athletes.
