Posta Rangers defied the underdog tag to stun Thika United 1-0 in a SportPesa Premier League (SPL) match played at Thika Stadium yesterday.
Titus Echesa scored in the 83rd minute after a poor clearance by Michael Mutinda though it was the hosts who dominated a huge chunk of the match.
However, it was Rangers who were hungrier for goals in the early exchanges with Dennis Mukaisi’s thunderbolt from about 25 yards out hitting the post barely four minutes into the action.
The first chance of the game fell on Posta’s side with Dennis Mukaisi’s header hitting the post in the fourth minute. Mukaisi collected the ball from a Kennedy Onyango’s cross as Posta entertained within Thika’s area
The second chance for the mailmen came four minutes after the first one, this time Jared Obwoge failing to beat Eliud Emase in goal.
Thika also had their missed chances mainly from Eugene Mukangula, Dennis Agesa and James Kinyanjui.
Elsewhere at Camp Toyoyo grounds in Jericho, resurgent Nakumatt continued with their winning ways, crushing Wazito 3-0, thanks to goals by Clinton Kisiavuki, Timonah Wanyonyi and Brian Nyakan.
Nakumatt would have secured an even bigger victory had Boniface Mukekhe being clinical with his 45th minute delivery.
In Bungoma, Elvis Rupia scored twice to help hosts Nzoia Sugar salvage a point in a 2-2 draw with Mathare United.
Mathare’s bravado saw them scoring twice through Samuel Olwande and Cliff Nyakeya.
In the meantime, Tusker bank on their unblemished performance during the SportPesa Shield round of 64 match last week when they host Ulinzi Stars in a mid-week clash at Ruaraka today.
Tusker, who steamrolled Taita Taveta Allstars 7-0 in the Shield, will be hoping to replicate the form against Ulinzi who are among the teams gunning for the SPL title.
Placed in an odd 13th position in the chart, Tusker will mainly rely on Timothy Otieno and Boniface Muchiri to unlock the defence of Ulinzi which has been one of the meanest in the league having conceded only 13 goals.
Masita Masuta and Daniel Waweru are some of the players Ulinzi will be relying on in pursuit of maximum points.
Elsewhere at Mbaraki Sports ground in Mombasa, Bandari face Vihiga United’s test.
Last week, Vihiga’s eccentric striker Chris Masinza exhibited great scoring antics after scoring a hat-trick in the team’s 5-0 demolition of Nyamira All Stars in a Shield match and whether he can repeat the exploits against Bandari remains to be seen.
