My journey with fashion began…at the age of five. My mum is a creative and a jewellery designer — her eye for fashion definitely rubbed off on my sisters and I. We had the opportunity to travel to different festivals and interact with other designers. And I believe because of that, I have always had an open mind when it comes to fashion.
I’d say my role in the fashion industry… consisted of being a cultural ambassador in my pageant days, fashion emcee and mentor to upcoming youth in the industry.
As Miss Kenya USA, one of my main roles was…representing Kenya as a cultural ambassador at a number of Kenyan events in the diaspora. A lot of the time, my look was inspired by the Kenyan flag, from my outfits to hair to nails, and because of this, I eventually I picked up the nickname ‘Kenyan Queen’. No matter where I landed in the world, I did my best to represent my people and country, and all through fashion.
I keep my glam routine…simple. I use Aveeno skin care range, I also use a brow and eyeliner alongside a lip gloss!
If money was no object…I would own a private jet! I love travelling. I could discover hidden gems of Kenya, travel all over the world and learn about life from a global perspective.
Queen Bey’s closet is…one I would kill for. I love the fire Beyoncé brings be it the stage or the elegance she drips on the red carpet. I am also a big fan of Victoria Kimani — she has an amazing sense of style. It’s funky, fresh and striking.
As a lady, one item you should always have in your closet…is a good jumpsuit. It’s easy to transition this outfit from a day to night look.
Currently, I am wearing…my own collection. Little known fact, I have a line of Afro urban wear. Because of this, a lot of the time you will spot me rocking my pieces.
If I wasn’t in media…I’d be in a classroom. Teaching is my first love. I had such an amazing educational journey that I wanted other students to love school as much as I did.
My go-to accessories are…statement earrings. I don’t think I can go a day without wearing a pair. I love big hairstyles, and the ear pecies balance out the whole look.
My signature look…always yells ‘Wakanda Forever’ or ‘African Queen’. Ankara will always be an obsession — I don’t think I would ever get tired of it. It’s interesting because I am quite reserved in nature, but just something about loud colours and prints speaks to me. I let my style speak for me as should you.
My closet never lacks…cute jackets. I’m cold blooded, so I always have to have a jacket on hand. I create really cute African print windbreakers.
In my purse…lip gloss is a must! My day-to-day job involves talking on radio, TV and hosting events — my lips have to be on point!
A well-dressed lady is…one that understands herself and body. Accentuating your best features gives you confidence and makes you stand out.
