Nyanza North Athletic Kenya (AK) branch has selected a team that will participate in the upcoming U20 regional field and track championships.
The event, marred by poor turn out with only a handful of participants turning up was conducted in Kisumu, Siaya and Homa Bay respectively to select athletes to represent the three counties at the regional competition at Moi Stadium, Kisumu.
According to the race organisers, only 1-2 finishers in every event will qualify for the regional competition.
The regional event will be used to select athletes that will take part in the National Trials for the IAAF World Under-20 Championships set for July in Finland.
The event organisers attributed the low number of students to the ongoing secondary schools championships. “We had targeted majorly school going students from both secondary and primary but it seemed our calendar did not factor in the championships currently going on in various schools across these regions,” said Nyanza North Public Relations Officers Jared Opul.
In Kisumu, James Otieno braved the scorching sun to book a slot for the regionals after breasting in just 2:07:70 minutes in 800m while his closest challenger Newton Adoyo came second recording 2;08:38 minutes to also qualify for the regionals. In the spirit of 200m Elvis Ochieng of Wachara Mixed Secondary School emerged victors after he braced the tape in a time of 23:38 ahead of Simra Opondo and Frank Otieno who clocked 24;05 and 25:06 to clinch the second and third positions respectively.
