Interview with Viola Karuri – singer, songwriter, producer

Which is your latest gadget?

iPhone 7. I bought it mid last year. I tend to hold on to my gadgets for years.

What do you love in it the most?

Its ease of use. All my hustle needs in one tidy little package.

A gadget you wouldn’t trade for anything?

My computer, an iMac. It does everything for me, quite literally.

What’s your worst gadget ever and why?

I actually don’t have one… I’ve been stuck to Apple products for years, so I can’t complain. They’re fantastic!

As an artiste, what among your gadgets do you value the most?

My voice recorder. It contains my whole life and livelihood.

Which is your most expensive gadget and how much did it cost?

My iMac, but I can’t tell you the price… Hahaa

Which gadget do you use the most?

My phone. Like I said, it’s all I need for my hustle.

Which app do you use mostly on your phone and why?

Voice Memo app. As a songwriter, I’m permanently in a state of recording melodies and lyrics to be developed later.

What would you be if you were a gadget?

I would be a radio. Music feeds my soul, so, I’d love to be able to transmit that feeling to my audience.

What’s the gadget you can’t live without?

My phone. I’m permanently on it. Second to my voice, it’s my source of income. I do have days where I just turn it off, though. I think it’s necessary for sanity.

If you were to upgrade one of your most valued gadgets, what would you opt for and why?

I’ve had my iPad for six years. Its screen is so cracked up (you really should see it), but I’ve been unable to let it go. I’ve been very loyal to it, but now I think I’m finally ready for that upgrade!

While shopping for gadgets, do you look for brands or the output?

I’m not ashamed to say that I’m the true definition of a brand loyalist!

The gadget you always wish you had.

A Neumann U87 microphone. I used it to record my first album, but it’s so expensive I had to rent it. The sound you get from it is so beautiful. If I ever got one, I’d spend more time staring at it than actually recording with it.
