Two suspected masterminds of the murders and rape of tens of Mt Elgon residents will be arraigned in Bungoma Law Courts this morning. The suspects were transported from Nairobi by Flying Squad detectives yesterday.

Timothy Kiptanui Kitai alias Cheparkach whom police had placed a Sh1 million bounty on his head will face the charges alongside accomplice Cleopas Ngaiwa.

Head of Flying Squad, an elite formation from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations, Musa Yego said the duo will be charged with various offences including rape and murder.

“We have various robberies, rape and murder cases. This is one of the breakthroughs made possible by the support of the Inspector General and the Director of Criminal Investigations,” Yego said.

Cheparkach was arrested mid this month in Eldoret. He was hiding in Uganda’s Kapchorwa region for a week before he came to Eldoret to look for a lawyer when he was arrested.

His accomplice Ngaiwa was arrested in Kericho.  He went into hiding in Isebania, Tanzania, before his arrest.

However, detectives warned political leaders against interfering with the ongoing hunt for and prosecution of lawbreakers in the area including asking witnesses of the atrocities to come out.

“There is little interference from political leaders. The work of the police must be left to the police. We know how to do our work. There are those asking witnesses and victims to come out and we have not. Why do they want to know or see them?” Yego posed.

A Bungoma-based lobby group, Western Kenya Human Rights Watch, had also called on the government to investigate and take action against Mt Elgon legislator Fred Kapondi and his political rival John Serut for allegedly recruiting and funding the ruthless criminal gangs.
