Mt Elgon MP Fred Kapondi has asked the government to lift the curfew imposed on Cheptais sub-county, Bungoma county two months ago.
He said following the arrest of the criminal gang leaders Timothy Kiptanui Kitai alias Cheparkach in Eldoret and his deputy Ngeywo Kitai in Kericho last week, the curfew should be lifted saying that it is hurting innocent residents.
The MP said the curfew was imposed following deadly attacks that hadput residents on edge saying that it should now be lifted after the suspected criminals were arrested. “Why should Mt Elgon residents continue to suffer yet the criminal gangs have been arrested and calm restored?’’ posed the lawmaker.
The curfew was imposed by Internal Security Cabinet secretary Fred Matiang’i two months ago following a renewed spate of attacks by suspected members of the outlawed Sabaot Land Defence Forces.
“The curfew had led to suffering of my people, we are farmers and business people, the majority of them have borne the brunt of security agents implementing the order, it should be lifted now,” he said.
Speaking to the People Daily, Kapondi lauded the State for arresting the suspected criminals.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) is holding Cheparkach in Nairobi for interrogations.
