Top WPL sides on points hunting mission

Women Premier League (WPL) table toppers, Thika Queens, Vihiga Queens, Eldoret Falcons and Trans Nzoia Falcons will all be in action this weekend as the race for the top finishers in the first leg of the league intensifies.

Holders Vihiga Queens have two fixtures where they will welcome bottom-placed Baringo Starlets at the Mumias Complex on Saturday, in a match where the champions are highly favoured to easily win.

Vihiga are second on the league table with 24 points after nine matches, having lost a single match to rivals Thika Queens. The side has scored 33 goals and conceded just eight in the nine matches played.

Their opponents, Baringo, who joined the league after a court order reinstated them to the senior league have found the going tougher than they expected as they are last on the log without a single point after 12 matches. They have six goals to their name but have soaked in most goals in the history of the league, 83, after as many matches.

Vihiga’s second clash will be no walk in the park as the Alex Alumira charges will be up against surprise package Trans Nzoia who are fourth on the log, with 23 points after 12 matches. Like Vihiga, Trans Nzoia have tasted defeat once after being promoted to the premier league having gone undefeated in the division one battle for promotion last season.

Trans Nzoia, under the tutelage of Justin Okiring is largely composed of school going players and their performance so far has left many in awe. In 12 matches the side has registered six wins and five draws.

“The approach for the two matches will be different since the teams’ abilities differ. Therefore I will field different players for each match to ensure that I do not have to deal with fatigue in the Sunday match. I am under no pressure right now and I have made sure my players are relaxed as well. I am confident we are on the right track to defending our title,” said Vihiga coach Alex Alumira.

Having played Gaspo Women yesterday, Thika will be in action on Sunday against ninth placed Mathare.

The latter is coming off a 5-0 thumping by Trans Nzoia and have a lot of work to do to salvage their top ten position as they have Soccer Queens and Spedag breathing on their necks.

Spedag host Kakakmega Leeds at Mbaraki while Eldoret Falcons play away against seventh placed Wadadia.
