Televangelist Gilbert Deya was yesterday released on a cash bail of Sh10 million by the High Court pending the hearing and determination of his child theft case.
Justice Luka Kimaru in his ruling said the court had to set stringent conditions so that the accused does not abscond after declining to allow the Director of Public Prosecutions application for more time to enable him to present 11 more witnesses while still in remand.
“The accused has a history of absconding and maligning the courts. He should follow terms to make sure he attends court. I order he be released on Sh10 million cash bail or a bond of similar amount, “ ruled the judge.
The controversial preacher is charged with five counts of stealing five children, all aged under 14 years, between 2002 and 2004, at Mountain View Estate, Nairobi.
Deya, who was recently deported to Kenya from the United Kingdom to face child theft charges, has been in remand at the Kamiti Maximum Prison since last year.
Justice Kimaru directed the matter to be mentioned on May 29 for confirmation of whether Deya paid the cash bail or bond to facilitate his release from Kamiti Prison.
