Exactly a month after being indefinitely barred from hosting a SportPesa Premier League (SPL) match due to fears of a catastrophe, Narok Stadium has received a clean bill of health and will be the setting of the match between Sofapaka and Zoo Kericho Saturday from 3pm.
The stadium had been closed after Mai Mahiu-Narok road developed large cracks at Suswa on March 13 following geological activities amidst fears that the surrounding areas could be affected.
Kenya National Highways Authority (KNHA) has since repaired the road and declared the place safe.
For Sofapaka, this game will serve to define their true pedigree at the 5,000-seater stadium and especially after they beat a comparatively stronger Vihiga United 1-0 in their latest fixture.
Despite claiming all the three points against Vihiga, Sofapaka interim coach John Baraza has advised his charges not to pull their legs off the gas pedal.
“This is an important game for us and obviously, we don’t expect it to be any easy. The win over Vihiga raised the confidence levels of my players and I want to believe we are capable of picking up from where we left,” said Baraza.
And while Baraza will be hoping that striker Kepha Aswani passes a late fitness test, Zoo have their squad intact and will mostly rely on pint-sized Mike Madoya and Nicholas Kipkirui to penetrate Batoto Ba Mungu’s backline.
In the meantime, Nakumatt who inflicted Zoo a painful 3-2 defeat last weekend will be hoping to administer the same dose to AFC Leopards in the second match of a double header at Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos.
The first of the two matches will see Mathare United battle it out with Bandari, before paving way for the match between Leopards and Nakumatt
Mathare, one of the host teams has confirmed that VIP tickets will be sold at Sh500 while terrace tickets will be available at Sh200.
Last week, Leopards were left purring after they restricted pre-match favourites Chemelil Sugar to a barren draw away but that should not be a reason for the big cats to under-estimate Nakumatt who will be angling to claim another big shot.
In Machakos, Bandari will be treading on the path of Mathare United, hoping to win and join the bandwagon of team that are chasing a top five finish in the league.
