Kenya Hockey Union (KHU) women premier league defending champions Telkom Orange rallied from behind to nail Sliders 5-2 in a heated match played at the City Park Stadium yesterday.
Sliders took an early lead in the match courtesy of a penalty corner shot by Nancy Kibogong in the fourth minute to spark her team mates’ fighting spirit which saw them make it 2-0 just four minutes later. Sliders skipper Anita Agunda scored their second goal off a penalty shoot to predict a good match for them but their comfortable lead was short lived as scoring machine Jackline Mwangi bounced back Telkom in the match in the 13th minute with a superb field goal to cut the deficit to 2-1 in the first quarter.
Jackline was not done yet, scoring her second goal of the match in the 29th minute to level the scores at the break to give way to her teammates to finish the scoring spree in the third quarter. Orange scored three goals in the third quarter for the win against Sliders after a tense exchange. Kenyan international Barbara Simiyu scored their third goal on resumption of the third quarter, a goal that was followed by Georgina Lumumba’s daring shot, which saw the scores changed to 4-2 in their favour.
Barbara Simiyu thereafter completed her brace with her second goal in the match for the 5-2 win.
In the other Women premier league match played at the same venue, Strathmore Scorpions overcame Amira Sailors 2-0, goals scored by livewire Gilly Okumu in a span of three minutes in the last quarter of the match.
