The fire that broke out at Sarit Centre this morning may not have been contained as had earlier been communicated by the mall management. The management had sought to reassure shoppers and tenants on their Twitter account earlier this morning.
“We would like to inform all our tenants and shoppers that there was a small fire in one of our outlets on the ground floor which has now been contained by Sarit Centre security, staff and the Nairobi County Fire Department. No injuries reported,” the mall management said.
According to new reports, flames are still raging on the ground floor of the mall, and shoppers are currently being evacuated. Wananchi have also been asked to stay clear of the area as firefighters struggle to put out the inferno. The Sarit Center is Kenya’s first mall, having been built in 1983. It is situated in the heart of Nairobi’s Westlands business district, and is in close proximity to the Westgate mall that was attacked by Al Shaabab terrorists on 21st September, 2013.
