An attempt to oust Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) Secretary General Wilson Sossion failed for the second time after a faction of members stormed the union’s National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting yesterday.
The group, which tried to disrupt the meeting at the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) yesterday chanting anti-Sossion slogans, said they are against his occupying two public offices and instead, his deputy Hesbon Otieno should take over.
The group tried to divert attention from the agenda of the meeting chanting “one man one job” slogan but failed after delegates defended Sossion. Otieno said during a NEC meeting held on April 11, Sossion assured them that he was willing to relinquish his post.
“There is no way Sossion can hold two public offices. In our last meeting, he agreed to step down but later changed his mind,” he said. Addressing the meeting, Sossion dismissed the group saying he is in office legally and those claiming to be against him are not members of the NEC hence their opinions are insignificant.
He added that Knut is in a critical state trying to fight for teachers’ better terms of service from their employer Teachers’ Service Commission hence there is no room for sideshows. Sossion is also an ODM nominated Member of Parliament.
