84 schools in 5 counties submerged in floods

The Ministry of Education has advised county directors of education to liaise with county commissioners and asses the flood situations in their respective areas and make informed decisions on the opening of schools to avoid exposing students to the risk of being swept away by floods.

Education Principal Secretary Dr. Belio Kipsang’ issued the advisory even as it emerged that at least 25,000 pupils in the coastal counties of Kilifi, Tana River and Lamu failed to report to school on the opening day after their schools were submerged by floods.

A total of 7o schools have so far been destroyed even as the ongoing heavy rains threaten to derail the commencement of the 2nd term of schooling with  several families displaced from their homes across the country.
