Gor Mahia and Mathare United have one thing in common in the 2018 Kenyan Premier League (KPL) they are both enjoying an almost unblemished run to the satisfaction of their fans.
For the two front runners, it has been difficult to ascertain who between them would clinch the title as they have been exchanging the top position as if it is their preserve. And when Gor was engaged in continental assignments, Mathare so early took the driving seat.
But all that changed last week when Gor topped Mathare by three points with two matches to spare this is why Sunday’s meeting between the two will offer an insight as to where the title is headed.
Certainly this is the highlight in a weekend that is marked by eight matches but between the two, it will be Mathare who will be under pressure to chalk maximum points having lost 1-0 to Wazito in their last fixture. In contrast, Gor will be coming into the match on the back of a 2-2 draw with Chemelil Sugar and will be keen to protect their dignity of being the only team that has yet to lose a match this season.
Mathare coach Francis Kimanzi said they will treat the match like any other but of course with a mind-set of beating Gor to get back in the groove for a KPL title chase.
“Gor is a strong team and we expect a tough match and our target is to atone for the Wazito defeat. If we get our act together, we are sure we will get something from the match,” said Kimanzi.
Gor skipper Haroun Shakava said the team is determined to improve their result against Chemelil although he conceded that they don’t expect things to be any easier against Mathare.
“If we can maintain our unbeaten run it will be the best thing to do since we’ll be assured of retention of the title. I hope all the players will give a 100 per cent in terms of performance,” For Gor, players like Ivorian Epharim Ghuikan, Jacques Tuyisenge and Samuel Onyango will come in handy while Mathare’s trump cards include Crispin Oduor and Cliff Nyakeya.
In the meantime, Robert Matano will be seeking his second win since he took over the Tusker’s coaching rein last week after the sacking of Sam Timbe over poor results.
Matano who presided over Tusker’s 1-0 win over Wazito will rely on Robert Achema and Timothy Otieno. Elsewhere in Machakos, AFC Leopards, fresh from a 1-1 draw against Kariobangi Sharks, will be hunting for points against Vihiga United.
