The family of the 32-year-old woman who succumbed to her injuries after being stabbed by thugs in Kangemi, Nairobi county, has been allowed to collect her body for burial.

Matilda Anyango’s body has been lying at the MP Shah Hospital mortuary pending results of the postmortem carried out by the Government Pathologist yesterday. Initially, the hospital had declined to release the body for burial over a Sh860,000 bill dispute.

The hospital had insisted that Anyango’s family settles the bill that accumulated after being admitted for 12 hours. Her family said she was taken to hospital on April 11 at 9.30pm but succumbed to her injuries at 10am.

When activist Boniface Mwangi posted the story on Facebook, it attracted public outcry perhaps compelling the hospital to release the body. According to the family, the body had been detained until the bill is settled.

The hospital’s management denied the claims with the chief operations officer Toseef Din saying Anyango received the best medical care to save her life. The hospital bill was broken down as Sh300,000 for surgeon’s fee, Sh157,285 for drugs, Sh42,600 for bed charges, among others.
