A man was shot dead and three others injured when police opened fire at a mob baying for the blood of a suspected thug in Miritini, Mombasa county.

Hussein Nduke, a driver with Stedmak Hotels, was killed in the Monday evening melee. He was taken to Coast General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His family now wants the officer who shot him arrested and charged. His father, Nduke Beja Mahaja, criticised the police for “using excessive force”.

“My son just happened to be at the scene. Why did he have to die that way?” he asked. The deceased’s brother Beja Nduke said: “We are calling upon the Interior Cabinet secretary Fred Matiang’i to take action against the officer.”

Changamwe OCPD Peter Omanwa confirmed the incident, but denied claims that police used excessive force, saying they only fired in the air to scare the crowd. Rights lobby Haki Africa has condemned the incident.
