Kakamega face old foes in Western Term One Games

National rugby 15s champions Kakamega School will launch their regional campaign against their old foes Chavakali Boys in Pool B at Friends School Kamusinga Grounds as the Western Kenya Secondary School Sports Association (WSSSA) Term One Games kick-off today in Bungoma County.

Kakamega will then take on little known Sigalame Boys from Busia County in their second match of that day before winding up their group stage fixtures against host Friends School,Kamusinga.

According to Kakamega’s coach Amos Wamanga, his side will treat every single match with utmost zeal, recognising the daunting task they face at the preliminaries after being drawn against heavyweights Chavakali.

“Every year comes with new challengers and probably prepared well enough that the previous edition. I still have a couple of players from our last year team will be bring experience to the team alongside new promising talents we have tapped,” Wamanga exuded confidence.

Chavakali are no pushovers if their history in school games rugby is anything to go by while Kamusinga is revered mostly in hockey boys having won the national title 12 times and it remains to be seen if they will make a mark in rugby 15s.

Kamusinga will take on Sigalame in their first match today. In Pool A which arguably comes about as the group of death, draws together 2016 national rugby 15 champions Bungoma High, alongside last year’s regional losing finalists St Peters Mumias, Vihiga from Vihiga Couny Boys and Nambale Boys from Busia County.

Bungoma will face off Nambale Boys in their opening match today before locking horns with Vihiga and later on the blockbuster of the day that will pit them against St Peters Mumias. Vihiga will be up against the Saints in their first match today before St Peter’s battles out against Namable.

Only top two teams from each pool will advance to the semi-finals in which winners of Pool A will face off second ranked team in pool B and vice versa.

With draws released, both teams have been separated from meeting in the preliminaries as Kegati start campaign from Pool A that features Rachar, Kerembe, Msare while invincible Sega commands Pool B alongside Nyamanga, Arambe and Marindi.
