The best of Nyanza school teams take to pitch in Term One Games

Nyanza Region’s sports top cream will flock St Mary’s Yala in Siaya county as the institution braces up to host the 2018 edition of the Nyanza Region Secondary School Sports Association (NRSSSA) Term One games, starting this morning.

Host and regional rugby 15s defending champions St Mary’s Yala who upset titans Maseno School during last year’s epic final, begin the journey to defend their crown this morning with a mouth-watering class against former champions Cardinal Otunga High School (COHS) Mosocho.

Maseno, who had for long dominated the sport in the region were knocked off their perch by the hitherto unheralded St Mary’s Yala last year, will be battling to restore their pride when the games get underway, opening their campaign against Kanga High School while Ambira vs Agoro Sare and Nyambaria vs Ndiru wraps up the opening round of matches before St Mary’s Yala and Maseno renew rivalry in the second round of the preliminaries in the day’s afternoon fixtures.

In hockey girls’ showdown, invincible Sinyolo Girls who have proved unbeatable in Nyanza Region after winning the girls title in six straight years from 2012 to last year, 2017 begin their seventh straight title hunt against Mbaga while former runners up Kisumu Girls and Nyamira seek to dethrone them when they begin their campaign against Mabera Girls and Amb. Pamela Mboya respectively.

While in boy’s category, three-time champions Kisumu Day seek fourth straight title with an opening match against Ramba and with former champions and dominant Maseno out of this year’s campaign, Kisii School and Kisumu Boys who meet in the opening match stand as Kisumu Day’s main threats in defending their title this year.

National and regional six-time champions (2013-2017) Sega launch their handball title defence against Arambe with Kisii’s champions Senior Chief Musa Nyandusi (SCMN) Kegati taking on Rachar while in boys’ category, defending champions Kanyawanga take on Nyamagwa SDA with former champions Maseno seeking to restore lost glory with an opening match against Rangala Boys.=
