Surprising health benefits of onions

Almost all our dishes are incomplete without this vegetable. But did you know that aside from enhancing the flavours, onions do a lot more to your health. All good things though. This layered veggie goes a long way in boosting your immunity and also helps heal wounds rather quickly. Milliam Murigi looks at some of the lesser-known benefits of this humble vegetable

1. Calms cough

Before you run to the drugstore and spend money on cough syrup, why not make your own home syrup? Take one head red onion, slice it and keep it in an air tight jar. Add a tablespoon of sugar to it.

Leave it overnight. By morning, the mixture would have turned syrupy. Have a teaspoon of the mixture every hour, but make sure you finish it the same day. You must consume it fresh. Despite the unpleasant taste, in just a couple of days, your cough would have vanished.

2. Relieves nausea

If you suddenly feel sick, then immediately go to the kitchen. Remove the head of onion, cut it in half and attach to each a piece of armpits. Hold them there for a couple minutes and your nausea would be gone.

3. Eliminates unpleasant foot odour

Onions have powerful anti-fungal properties. And if your feet emit a peculiar smell when you take off your shoes after a long day, it means you have the fungus. Rub your feet with onions for 10 minutes, and then rinse your feet in warm water. If possible, repeat this cycle three times per day. The smell will permanently go in just two or three days.

4. Put an end to an ear infection Anyone who has ever experienced the pain in the ears knows what the hell it is like. Take an onion and keep peeling it off layer by layer, until you reach its core, the bulbous white segment. Now slice it into two and place one in each ear before going to bed. When you wake up in the morning, your earache will be gone. This is owing to onion’s anti-inflammatory properties.

5. Prevents hair loss

Onion is rich in sulphur, which prevents hair loss. Squeeze out the juice of onion then use it to wash your hair. Use shampoo to remove the smell. This seriously strengthens the roots of hairs.

6. Stop nose bleeding

Be sure to have an onion around if you or someone in your family tends to get nosebleeds. When it happens, as quickly as you can slice an onion and hold it just underneath your nose. The fumes from the onion act as a natural coagulant to stop the bleeding.

7. Eliminate age spots on the skin

Onions can also be effective for eliminating those dark spots on your skin thanks to their sulphur compound which acts as an antiseptic, along with the acids in the onion, which work to exfoliate the skin. Simply slice up a red (preferably) onion and rub it directly onto those darker areas of your complexion after cleansing. Allow the juice to stay for about 10 to 15 minutes before rinsing well. Repeat one or two times each day. When used regularly, you’ll notice those spots begin to fade.

8. Eliminates boils

Boil is a painful pus-filled bump under the skin caused by infected inflamed hair follicles. Grate an onion and place it on top of the boil directly. Then place a bandage right over the boil to keep the onions right on top of the boil. Grated onion will pull the pus and bacteria out off the boil. Repeat this treatment until the boil disappears.

9. Fighting cancer

Of all the types of onions, the red variety are the most effective at killing breast and colon cancer cells, according to a recent study published in Food Research International. Onions are rich in quercetin and selenium. The former inhibits the activity of cancer cell and prevents the growth of cancer cell.

10. Relieves sinus

Put on top of the nose a couple of slices of onion. Or you can cut it, pour into a bowl, cover head with a towel and inhale this vegetable. Yes, the procedure is not the most pleasant, but the nose clears fine.
