National Super Alliance (Nasa) leader Raila Odinga’s wife Ida Odinga (pictured) has expressed fears that girls aged between 15 to 17 are under a threat in Siaya county.
She said Class Six and Seven girls were victims of early pregnancies and fistula disease which is products of ‘sex for gifts initiative’ Ida said there was a worrying trend especially in Bondo and Rarieda constituencies where girls were dropping out of school as soon as they reach Standard Six.
“Parents have abdicated their roles and left the girls in the hands of sponsors who engage school going girls in sexual escapades at the pretext of gifts,” she said.
Addressing women at Jaramogi Park in Bondo on Friday, Ida regretted that most of fistula patients in Siaya encountered disease in their first pregnancy conceived at tender ages.
She asked the County government through the office of the First Lady Rosala Rasanga to revive the sanitary towel programme for the poor girls in schools to prevent the high dropouts and early pregnancies.
