Kakamega School remained on course to retaining their national secondary schools rugby 15s title after keeping hold of the county crown by extending their dominance over St Peters Mumias with a 8-3 win during Kakamega County Term One finals on Saturday.
Kakamega also emerged winners in boys’ basketball after seeing off Mukumu 75-63 while Butere beat Mukumu 66-38 to claim the girls’ crown.
In girls’ hockey, Mukumu beat Nangili 3-0 while Musingu retained the boys’ hockey title with a 2-0 win over Kivaywa. Both Mukumu teams won handball titles, the girls beating Butere 17-15 while the boys hammered Butere 37-15. The winners qualified for the regional games slated for Bungoma from March 21-24.
Meanwhile, Senior Chief Musa Nyandusi (SCMN) Kegati Girls are the handball queens in Kisii after they successfully won the county title for a third straight year.
In the boys’ category, Nyamagwa SDA are the 2018 champions after edging out Nyatieko 15-13 while in rugby 15s, defending champions Cardinal Otunga had a David Marenoti’s last-minute penalty to thank for helping them beat Nyabigena 10-8.
In basketball, holders Itierio Girls saw off Kereri 44-27 while debutants Nyanchwa Boys stunned two-time winners Cardinal Otunga 73-43 for the 2018 crown. Hosts Kisii School and Kereri Girls retained their hockey boys and girls titles after hitting unassailable points in a round robin format while in athletics, Mary Moraa won all her races.
In Kisumu, Maseno School asserted their supremacy as they reclaimed the basketball crown which they lost to Kisumu Boys in last year’s competition and also defended the rugby 15s and handball titles.
In basketball, Maseno beat Kisumu Boys 32-26 in what was a repeat of last year’s finals while in rugby 15s, the edged out little-known Ndiru Secondary 35-3. Reports by Fred Likuyani, Viden Ochieng and Gibo Zachary
