Siaya County government has spent Sh15 million to upgrade Migwena Sportsground in Bondo Constituency with a view to bringing it to a standard of sports academy According to Director of Sports Sanmac Onyango, we have already spent Sh15 million out of the 26 million meant for upgrade of Migwena Sportsground.
“Since 2015/16 financial years, the County government had allocated 26 million for the project and in December 2015 a contract was awarded to contractor who has so far spent Sh11 million to improve playground, pavilion and put up infrastructures that will be used for operationalisation of the sports academy at Migwena,” said Onyango.
The sports director said that in the 2018/19 budget, the government will allocate Sh11 million to complete the Migwena grounds that will be the Siaya County multipurpose sports talents academy.
“The county government has started works at Migwena which includes improvement of playground, erection of a VIP pavilion, putting up modern changing rooms and washrooms and in the next financial year, the government will be renovating existing structures to suit the purposes of talents academy and in the long-term will put up modern accommodation and teaching facilities for the academy,” said Onyango.
Speaking at his office on Tuesday, Onyango said that the academy will host sportsmen and women whose skills will be enhanced through professional trainings to be sponsored by government.
He added that the county will in April undertake talent scouting in all the six-sub-counties and targets primary and secondary schools to get young men and women who are gifted on various sporting talents.
“As from March 15, the government will send out qualified resource persons in the form of referees, coaches and team managers to undertake talent scouting in the six-sub counties,” said Onyango adding that they target sporting activities organised by schools, county government and private individuals, The talents to be scouted include: football, volleyball, netball, basketball and athletics both road race and short races and we target 120 people.
