Cop charged with killing wife, 5-year-old daughter

A police officer accused of shooting dead his wife and five-year-old daughter was yesterday charged in the Nakuru High Court. Cosmas Biwott Kipchumba, who appeared before Justice Maureen Odero, was, however, not required to plead as the prosecution applied for more time for police to conclude investigations.

Kipchumba was arrested in Nandi county by detectives after he fled the scene on Wednesday. He was charged that on February 28 at Suswa area, in Subukia Nakuru county, he killed Shantel Nyambura, 5, and Jane Njoki, 26.

According to State prosecutor Jackson Motende, the police were looking for more evidence, hence, urged the court to grant them eight more days. “I wish to apply for eight more days to hold the suspect in custody to allow police conclude investigations into the murder,” he said.

In her ruling, Justice Odero ordered that the accused taken for a psychiatric examination and appear before court on March 15 for plea taking. Not required She granted the police eight more days to hold the suspect and directed that he be remanded at the Central Police Station.

“The accused person being the first appearance in court he is not required to plead, the accused be taken for psychiatric examination and appear on March 15 for plea,” said Odero.

Kipchumba is said to have had an argument with his wife before he shot both her and their daughter at the Anti-Stock Theft Unit camp in Subukia, Nakuru.
