A Nairobi court has detained for three more days a woman accused of stealing a baby at the Kenyatta National Hospital.
Nairobi Chief Magistrate Francis Andayi allowed police to continue holding Edinah Kerubo Mabuka after another complainant surfaced, accusing her of stealing her child.
The suspect was arrested in Kawangware on February 20 after she stole a two-week old infant at KNH. The court had previously allowed the police to detain her for five days to allow investigations to be completed.
Police claimed that preliminary probe had revealed that Kerubo was involved in a syndicate of child theft. In an affidavit by Emmanuel Kiptoo, a police officer attached at Directorate of Criminal Investigations, the court heard that the nature of the offence requires more time for investigating officers to complete investigations.
“The investigating officers are still looking for other potential witnesses who were patients at the hospital on the February 18 and have since been discharged,” he said.
More suspects are likely to be arrested as co-perpetrators of the child theft that shocked the nation. Yesterday, the police told the magistrate that another complainant came out, and the mode of operation described was similar to the KNH incident.
