Property worth millions of shillings on Thursday evening went up flames in at Kabarnet, Baringo county.
It is reported to have started from a garage where a power saw which was being repaired burst into flames.
The late evening incident brought the town to a standstill as residents battled the fire, which destroyed more than 50 shops.
Residents blamed the fire department and the County government for failing to respond quickly to the incident.
Business owners, who have left counting losses saying they watched helplessly for more two hours as their investments went up in flames.
Governor Stanley Kiptis empathised with the affected, saying it was unfortunate that the fire, which destroyed business, could not be contained before it spread. “We take this opportunity to express regret on this unfortunate incident,” he said.
He said his government will put measures in place to improve its disaster preparedness capacity to avoid loss of life and property.
Kiptis urged police to conduct speedy investigations to establish the cause of the fire, adding that the county government will work with the affected traders to ensure they re-open their businesses
